The Havanese are a fabulous breed! Fun and energetic and complete attention hounds they are absolutely hysterically funny and lovable. They adore children but are also terrific with the elderly and disabled. Probably the most versatile dog breed I have ever experienced.
Havanese lovers say they are like potato chips - you can't have just one. While this is certainly true for our family; the breed may not be for everyone. We want all of our prospective puppy families to know what they are getting into - the only way an animal ever leaves our family is when God takes them home and we want the same for all of the babies of our dogs.
Havanese come in all colors, markings, hair texture and to some degree size. Although they are a member of the toy group they are really not extremely small and are comparable in size to a Miniature Schnauzer although not as tall and a little longer. The average Havanese is 8 1/2" to 11 1/2" at the withers, weigh about 12 to 15 pounds, are longer than tall giving them a rectangular appearance and have wavy hair. Our dogs are a good example of the differences you find in the Havanese breed. While both of our dogs are AKC registered and both come with fabulous pedigrees they are vastly different. Our male, Charlie, is very small, weighing a little less than 8 pounds, has fairly straight hair and is white and cream in color (most people think he is solid white). Our female, Lola, is right at the average, weighs about 12 pounds, has wavy to curly hair and is black and white. She has a black head, black spots down the center of her back ending in a big black spot on her rear end and tail. She also has white eyebrows, cheek patches and chin.
They love to play - chasing a ball, fetching anything, chasing or wrestling each other - they are playful by nature. This isn't to say they are too energetic but they are playful and love to be played with.
They love people and want to be with you always and are true snugglers.
They are "perchers" and want to be up high. My husband says they are like cats - we find them walking on or even laying on end tables, couches, beds or anywhere else. Our precoucious little Lola has even been caught repeatedly on our dining room table looking for scraps.
Ours have not been distructive (at least not as adults - ALL puppies are) but they are little theives. My daughters' stuffed animals are their favorite things to steal but anything snuggly is fair game. They don't tear them up they just steal them and snuggle them. They have buckets of their own toys but they just want to love us so much they love our stuff too.
They are a long-haired breed which is great because they don't shed but that also means they need their hair-do's done. I kept ours long for shows but after my husband was seriously hurt in an accident and I couldn't spend as much time on hair-dos I had them cut into puppy cuts which is very cute and much easier to maintain. You take care of their hair just like you would your own. Comb out all the tangles, wash, condition and comb again. You only need to bathe them as necessary of course but their hair needs to be combed if left long every day and if short at least once a week.
Now, if I haven't scared you away please keep looking for more pictures and information on our dogs.
