Ahh! The Miniature Schnauzer - my favorite breed! I have loved them all my life - well, since I was about six and it's been a really long time since then! HaHa!! In my opinion the Miniature Schnauzer is the greatest! Don't get me wrong I am an absolute dog lover (obviously, since I live with six), but they truly are a terrific breed to live with. We want all of our prospective puppy families to know what they are getting into - the only way an animal ever leaves our family is when God takes them home and we want the same for all of the babies of our dogs.
All of our dogs are AKC registered. The AKC recognizes all colors in the Miniature Schnauzer however, only the solid black, black and silver, and salt and pepper may be shown in the conformation ring. All other colors are allowed to be shown in obediece, agility, etc. We have chosen to own and breed our lovely black and white parti colored Miniature Schnauzer, Isabella, because she is different and has the best temperment of any dog I have ever known. In our Miniature Schnauzer breedings we want the quality of a show dog with a little something extra that makes ours different. My Max is a show quality solid black Miniature Schnauzer therefore, it is possible for us to have both traditional schnauzer colors and parti colors.
Miniature Schnauzers are small but not foo-foo in any way and for those of us who want the convenience of a small dog without the prissiness of a small dog they are perfect.
They are fantastic with children, the elderly and the disabled - just ask my children and grandparents!
They love to be with you any where you are yet they are amazingly independent. They like snuggling, riding in cars and just generally going wherever you go. My very beloved Twinkles was my baby - truly! She was held, cuddled and loved, was hardly without some sort of bow or foo-foo decoration on her collar and yet loved to chase cows, rabbits and especially liked bird hunting.
I love having them around other big dogs - watching a fifteen pound Miniature Schnauzer keep up and imitate exactly a seventy-five pound labrador is hysterical and yet completly inspiring. My husband's Red Heeler, Val, is the ruler of our household - a giant real 'guy' dog in everyway. Val is our protector, he is also a hunter, a fisherman, a traveling companion, a welder's helper, and a remodeling supervisor and my sweet little Max loves to copy him in every way - getting on his big brother's last nerve!
They are amazingly smart and very easily trained. Sometimes they can even be too smart but they still mind; like a teenager they'll do what you say but you are gonna get the look! The only trouble I have ever had with Miniature Schnauzers is that they all seem to love trash. We just put ours in a broom closet and avoid the problem all together.
Miniature Schnauzers do not shed which is fantastic but they do have to be groomed regularly. Mine have a standing appointment at our groomers every five weeks for about $30 per dog (of course groomers rates to vary so you may want to investigate this further). In addition to regular grooming, they need bathed only as necessary and combed at least once a week. You take care of their hair just like you would your own. Comb out all the tangles, wash, condition and comb again.
